The majority of the work within the Community has been done by Clodaus. However, recently too much has been going on for that to continue. While Clodaus will still play a major role in the development of the Community, he requires some aid. This page will be updated periodically with ways members can help as things come to mind.

All contributors will get full credit for their work and may use it as an example of their work (for any situation, including resumes), unless it is otherwise noted below.

Everyone

You do not need any special skills to help out the Community. Everyone can play a role. Below is a list of general things you may be able to do for the Community.

Donate

One of the easiest ways to show your support for the Community is by making a donation via the button on the left hand side of the page. Every little bit will help to ensure The Otherkin Community can continue to grow and thrive. More information on how donations help the Community can be found at The Otherkin Community:Site support.

You may also make a donation by purchasing products from The Otherkin Community store. Not all products are complete, however some listed there may interest you. Once the store gets some use, it will be upgraded and members will be allowed to contribute their own designs for products.

Write Content / Post

If you have knowledge on a certain subject, there are a number of ways to contribute. The first of such ways is by simply posting in the Community Forums. Members constantly come by with questions. If you have any insight on the situation or topic being discussed, feel free to contribute it. The only thing we ask is that you please only provide what appears to be definitive answers on topics you have knowledge on. Community moderators will be very protective in order to ensure members are not being fed false information.

If you are very knowledgeable on a particular topic, consider writing an article for the wiki. In doing so, you will contribute information that anybody else can add to or correct. While users are encouraged to write in the wiki, you may also write an article and post it in the forums. Should a moderator find it informative, he/she may mark it as an article causing it to stand out from other posts.

Ask Questions

Maybe you're new to all the material the Community has to offer. You can help by simply asking questions within the Community Forums. Chances are, others have very similar or even the same questions. By asking them, you help to build a collection of material that others may browse through to gain answers. Even though many may have the information you're looking for, they may not post it because nobody has given them the opportunity. Even if it's a small question, or may seem stupid to you, chances are it's worth asking.

Make Suggestions

The Otherkin Community Forums contain an area where you may submit your ideas to help better The Community. Ideas are always welcome!

Write Articles

While one option is always to [[Help:Editing|contribute to the wiki], another method you may prefer is writing your own personal articles and submitting them within the submission forums on The Otherkin Community Forums. The benefit of this method is that the work is entirely yours - nobody else can edit or change it. Of course, that's also a downside - nobody can improve on it.

Submissions made may also be included in Community compilations, such as books containing information on the various topics The Otherkin Community present.

Webmasters, Bloggers, etc

Do you own a website? A blog? What about some type of social networking site? If you have any type of website where you can freely post material, you will be able to help by placing a link to The Otherkin Community on the website.

For more information on linking to the Community, see Category:Banners.

Accountants, Financial Advisers

The Otherkin Community is looking for an accountant who would like to donate their time in to look over and manage The Otherkin Community's financial records, provide financial advice, as well as prepare the necessary tax forms.

If you would like to apply for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to Clodaus.

Lawyers

We would like one or more lawyers knowledgeable in New York not-for-profit law and the IRS to donate their time for consulting. We would like somebody who is able to respond quickly to e-mails, and the ability to take phone calls is a plus (in case of emergencies).

If you would like to apply for this position, please send a resume and cover letter to Clodaus.

Developers

Most of the work within the Community thus far (and much of the future work) involves programming (mainly web development). If you have exceptional programming skills, then maybe you will be able to provide your aid on the following projects.

Developers will never work directly on anything that is directly visible or in use by the users. Instead developers will modify copies of the software they are working on to ensure everything works properly and is secure before publishing it.

Requirements:

  • At least a couple years experience as an active developer in your field. We appreciate those who wish to help, however please do not attempt to take on a project if you do not have much experience.
  • Ability to write secure code. We can't have holes in any of our systems.
  • Ability to optimize code. Speed is important. While the current website does not demonstrate this philosophy, the new Community website that is under development is heavily optimized for performance. All other systems should be as well to get the most out of our resources and ensure fast, quality service to our members.

Each modification you make will be looked over by other developers to ensure the above requirements have been met. Unless otherwise noted, the code will be available for other developers to look over. Once the software being modified is in a stable state, the majority will be released under the GNU General Public License. Until that time, the code will only be released to developers. This will ensure that other malicious users do not find problems within the code that they will be able to exploit.

Keeper (C Developers)

Keeper is the Community IRC moderation bot. The new bot, an IRC service, is still in the ALPHA stages. Clodaus has not had much time recently to work on it. If you are knowledgeable in C and the Anope IRC Services, you will be able to help.

Can you help?

Please e-mail the following information to Clodaus:

  • The amount of time you have spent working with C
  • What work you have done with the Anope IRC services
  • If you have any examples of your work, feel free to provide a link or attachment (to the source code)
  • Do you have experience with SSH on a Linux system?
