The Otherkin Community:Values

From The Otherkin Community

The Otherkin Community has a strong set of values that is heavily enforced by the staff. We everyone here at the Community to be able to express their opinion and beliefs, as well as ask questions, in a productive and objective atmosphere, while still preserving the element of belief that serves as a foundation for many individuals. Therefore, there is an extensive list of Rules & Regulations that must be followed. Though long, members will find that the rules are hard to break so long as you keep in mind the idea of respect.

So what are our values, and why do we enforce them so strongly?

Community

The most important part of The Otherkin Community is you - our members. You are the driving force that makes The Otherkin Community what it is. Members demand a great deal of respect and their well being is always put ahead of everything else. The majority of the Rules & Regulations exist to protect the members from harmful influence and to ensure that they remain comfortable in such a controversial environment.

The Otherkin Community's projects are all a group effort and contain that element of community. Constructive collaboration is key to The Community's success.

Respect

Our strongest value is respect. Most of the topics of discussion within the Community are highly controversial and there often exists very little evidence to support either side of the arguments. People have a right to believe what they wish; we ask that you respect others' beliefs and do not attempt to force your own beliefs or will onto others.

Most members will find that, so long as they remain respectful to others, they will rarely, if ever, have any problems with moderation and will be welcomed by both the staff and other members.

Objectivity

Though surrounded by belief, this is a scientific community. Personal claims or information that cannot be backed up should be kept to a minimum, and questions are highly encouraged (so long as they are respectful to the individual should the question be personal or questioning of his/her beliefs). During discussions, members will often be confronted with constructive arguments or questions on information they have provided. These questions allow members to further explain their personal views, encourage thought and personal exploration, and help to develop theories and more accurate information.

Open-Mindedness

Everyone is encouraged to keep an open mind - both skeptics and practitioners. Either side may be correct in various situations. Individuals should keep an open mind, evaluate the statements of others, take statements into consideration and then do with that information what they wish. Open-minded doesn't mean that you have to accept anything. Just listen.

The Otherkin Community exists to help others learn and grow. We hope that members will work with us to keep within our values and to help the Community remain a place that members will consider a home for many years to come.
